DEEP PACKET INSPECTION (DPI) BY INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS

DPI allows ISPs to track users' Internet browsing activities and
can be data mined for targeted marketing purposes.

"Every time we visit the Internet, everything we read, everything
we see -- all of it is up for grabs with DPI. If that information
is obtained by the government, then you have exactly zero privacy
online." -- Timothy Sparapani, ACLU Senior Legislative Counsel
<http://www.aclu.org/privacy/internet/36021prs20080717.html>

Embarq, which serves 1.3 million Internet customers in 18 states,
including Virginia, acknowledged that it used "deep packet inspection"
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/16/AR2008071602378.html>

"WHAT YOUR BROADBAND PROVIDER KNOWS ABOUT YOUR WEB USE:
DEEP PACKET INSPECTION AND COMMUNICATIONS LAWS AND POLICIES"

Deep packet inspection is the equivalent of postal employees opening
envelopes and reading the letters inside. To do DPI, network devices
examine the payload of a packet-the actual data the packet carries-in
addition to the packet header. To inspect a packet deeply means to
examine the contents of the Web browsing mail, instant message, or
whatever other data the packet contains. Unless the content of the
packet is encrypted (as with most online purchases and bank transactions),
the entirety of the packet can be analyzed with DPI.

CONGRESS SPOTLIGHTS ANOTHER AMERICAN DATA PIMPER

NebuAd says it uses this data to build profiles for Web surfers'
IP addresses -- the series of numbers that identify a computer, but
not the user, connected to the Internet.

CNN REPORTER WHO CRITICIZES TERRORIST WATCH LIST IS PUT ON THE
TERRORIST WATCH LIST

"Coincidentally, this all began in May, shortly after I began a series
of investigative reports critical of the TSA. Eleven flights now
since May 19. On different airlines, my name pops up forcing me to
go to the counter, show my identification, sometimes the agent has
to make a call before I get my ticket" -- CNN reporter Drew Griffin

WHITE HOUSE STONEWALLING ON FBI INTERVIEW REPORT WITH CHENEY

Chairman Waxman explained the need for the report of the Vice President's
interview by quoting from Special Counsel Fitzgerald:

Special Counsel Fitzgerald has recognized that the criminal prosecution
of Mr. Libby inevitably left major questions about Vice President
Cheney unanswered. In his closing remarks to the jury, he said:

"There is a cloud over what the Vice President did that week. He
wrote those columns. He had those meetings. He sent Libby off to
Judith Miller at the St. Regis Hotel. At that meeting, the two-hour
meeting, the defendant talked about the wife. We didn't put that
cloud there. That cloud remains.'

The Committee's investigation seeks to penetrate this cloud surrounding
Vice President Cheney's conduct ... This oversight cannot be completed
without the production of the FBI interview report with the Vice
President. It also requires production of the unredacted reports
ofthe FBI interviews with other White House staff.

SCOTT MCLELLAN: GEORGE BUSH AUTHORIZED THE LEAK OF VALERIE WILSON'S IDENTITY

MCLELLAN: "The President asked 'What was the reporter asking?'
and I said 'He asserted that you were the one who authorized
Scooter Libby leaking this information' and he said 'Yeah, I did.'
It really took me back. I could tell he didn't want to sit
there and talk about it. ... At that point I made the decision
that I could no longer continue in this administration."

Although the EMBARQ story raises some eyebrows, the simple fact
remains that U.S. citizens' PRIVACY was lost years ago, largely to
ISPs that mined personal information that the public didn't know
about, and your Patriot Act-worshipping politicians didn't care about.

So stop worrying. Once all your personal stuff is purloined, you'll
have nothing personal LEFT to worry about. And just about everybody
will bear a stolen identity!

In effect, it'll mean we all get to meet more "new" people. Our lives
will be so much more interesting!
