Of course they were Any political ideology has "conservative"---"liberal" positions within their ideology The political lines of the mid-to late 18th century were marked by writings of various europeans writers, used to create a "unique" position on society and human interaction---not to mention the disgust of not being ccorded the same "rights" that all citizens of the Crown enjoyed. By any definition---the founders were engaged in incorporation all kinds of things inimical to the established order----that being what a conservative would "conserve" Lincoln was "progressive" for the times----taking on entrenched reactionary conservativism in Antebellum Southern States by dealing with issues of slavery in holding the Nation together The fight against the "established order" throughout all the early 20th century manifested itself in dealing with the LACK of regulation by government--allowing wealth, power and business to pretty much do as they pleased----and fought tenaciously against "change"---which is what conservatism best exemplifies. The "Counter-cultural revolution" is a long war against entrenched racists, and the continuation of the "cultural wars" against reactionary and extremist religious reich still continues. Basically, Conservatives that were successful UNDER CONSERVATIVE RULE. Basically, he politicized slavery to gain support to keep warring...
