Still, no "conservative" user of this newsgroup will venture to state either
1) what about America as a social structure and political entity is being
conserved, or 2) what "conservatives" actually and specifically, want to
conserve.
How can We the People know and evaluate what our "conservative" leaders in
Washington are accomplishing, if those leaders or those who speak for them
cannot articulate what they are doing or want to do?
Time is running out. November, 2008, and January, 2009, cannot come too
quickly for our nation and for the world.

I'm assuming that your questions are merely for rhetorical effect
because there are hardly any traditional conservatives active in
American politics, just as there are no traditional liberals.
Surely you've figured that out.

Yes, I figured that out some time ago. I posted my question hoping to
elicit some illumination of why various people in office or leading the
Republican Party or presuming to speak for that party continue to make such
a point of being "conservative."
If words we use have no meaning, why use them?

I'm sure they call themselves conservatives, just as others call
themselves liberals, either out of habit without realizing that it
doesn't actually represent their position, or they do it
intentionally to confuse.

Orwell pointed out that if you can control language, you can
ultimately control thought.
But, I don't think our current crop of politicians is that bright; I
think they're just mouthing the words of their predecessors.

My belief is that philosophical liberalism, after Locke and Jefferson, is
the only supportable political philosophy for Western societies and cultures
as they have developed in the past 500 years or so. Actually this
philosophy is most healthy for any society and culture, but in those rooted
in Oriental and Middle Eastern settings, they are not quite ready for such
dizzying stuff.
Or for using dictionaries that are more than Wikipedia. |
